Abstract
The aim of this study is to identify the specific features of foreign-language written communication in the maritime sphere based on a corpus of authentic ship documentation texts, with the aim of improving the professional foreign-language writing skills of students at maritime universities. The novelty of this article lies in the development of a linguistic and methodological classification of authentic ship documentation texts. This article examines the training of future maritime transport specialists in written English, a foreign language used as a means of communication in international waters. Teaching written English involves developing students' ability to accurately understand and independently create professional foreign-language texts used in foreign-language communication on board ships and in foreign ports. The article examines the specifics of professional situations of verbal communication in the maritime sphere of activity, proposes their typology and description of the main types of English-language professional texts used in real shipboard practice, and develops a possible method for their systematization. The author of the article proposes to classify authentic professional texts in the maritime sphere according to the functionality into routine and urgent ones. The application of this classification to teaching foreign language to students at maritime universities aims to develop students' ability to analyze the extralinguistic parameters of professional communication, such as the function of the message, speech intention, participants in the communication, and the chosen format of the message being created, which determine the writer's verbal behavior and contribute to the production of a verbally appropriate utterance.
